We’ve all had a calligraphy lesson at some point. Whether out of a desire to make beautiful greeting cards and signs, or because of schoolhouse projects, each one of us has turned our letters into designs. Calligraphic Calumny is based entirely on experience, a break from the rote and regulation that is so often associated with calligraphic arts. It is a project designed to bleed and borrow, to mix and match, and to represent the fascinating cultural cross-pollination that occurs through multicultural societies and intercontinental travel.
Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Mongol, Syriac, Latin, Greek, Russian, Tamazight… They all have their own canons of calligraphy, their own set rules and aesthetics. With Calligraphic Calumny, I break through the rigid boundaries and allow the styles and norms to bleed into one another. I compare and contrast, highlight and background, to explore how Kana can inform Kyrgyz, and where the Syriac becomes Arabic.
